Divya Dutta’s debut in Bengali films

Divya Dutta will play the role of a freedom fighter in Ujjal Chakrobarty’s next venture ‘Ananda Math’. She is making her Tollywood debut with this film. Ujjal Chakraborty’s “Ananda Math” is based on the famous novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The story is set in the background of the Sannyasi Rebellion in the late 18th century; Ananda Math is considered as one of the most important novels in the history of Bengali and Indian literature. Prosenjit Chatterjee is also in the film and Divya says she is very excited to work with him. Divya said that she has seen Prosenjit’s works and had secretly nurtured the wish to share screen space with him in her first Bengali venture, she said, adding, that this is just another feather in her cap. “In 1952, ‘Ananda Math’ was made in Hindi by Hemen Gupta. I’m playing the role essayed by Geeta Bali and that itself is a huge high,” said Divya.

Divya feels that it is quite an honour for her to feature in a film like this. The novel was banned by the British. She plays a freedom fighter, who changes her look to be with her husband and take part in the movement.

Ujjal Chakrobarty said that he has always admired Divya as an actor and was dying to work with her. Divya is not very fluent in Bengali but it is no hindrance to him.
